August 1 @ 4:43:32 a.m. Think Different Stanford's Jeffrey Pfeffer, one of my all-time favorite business thinkers, has some new research out that confirms one of Fast Company's long-held beliefs: that competing differently in a marketplace is strategy. In a new research paper, Pfeffer argues that the assumptions we frequently made as leaders often lead us astray.

August 3 @ 5:30:35 a.m. Book recommendation: The Tao is Silent It is not, as Smullyan himself notes, a book about Chinese philosophy, so don't buy it as an introduction to Taoism. Smullyan is not giving an exposition of Eastern religion or philosophy here, although he does include a helpful bibliography for anyone who wants to follow up on that topic. (In fact some of his best essays have at least marginally to do with Western religion.)

August 19 @ 4:17:42 a.m. Meditation Tip ZEN STUDENT: So Master, is the soul immortal or not? Do we survive our bodily death or do we get annihilated? Do we really reincarnate? Does our soul split up into component parts which get recycled, or do we as a single unit enter the body of a biological organism? And do we retain our memories or not? Or is the doctrine of reincarnation false? Is perhaps the Christian notion of survival more correct? And if so, do we get bodily resurrected, or does our soul enter a purely Platonic spiritual realm?

August 22 @ 5:47:34 a.m. Do What You Love I recently read Steve Jobs's 2005 Stanford University commencement address. In it, Jobs describes a simple question he uses to measure how inspired he feels each day. Since the age of 17, he has been asking himself the same question every morning. "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" "Whenever the answer has been 'no' for too many days in a row," he goes on to say, "I know I need to change something."
